I've always loved landscape paintings by the m. How they capture the light so that you can feel the rays of the sun. I try to mimic that kind of lighting whenever possible.
Shooting amongst tall trees can be tricky because the trees shade the light when the sun goes lower. So I opted to shoot during "high noon" which most photographers try to avoid. But the vertical rays of the sun lit the trail and the tree trunks with dappled lighting. Using proper exposure techniques and usage of old school filters, I was able to render the scene in a more painterly way, as opposed to photographic way. Also, I focused on the near tree trunk so that the far scene went a bit soft. This helped to with that 'painterly' feel, I think.
